Introduction of Department

As you read through this homepage, you will learn what the Department of Bacteriology at Juntendo University has to offer its students to prepare for the future. Juntendo University has been a famous University for her excellence in teaching and research in Japan for over 160 years. Since it began as the Department of Bacteriology in the Faculty of Medicine in early 19th century our Department has been an important contributor to the Juntendo reputation. Over the years its faculty and staff have enabled many graduates to become leaders in medicine, education, and research in universities, hospitals, industries and in government laboratories. The Department of Bacteriology is located in a modern and well equipped building. The faculty, consisting of dedicated teachers and respected researchers, supported by an excellent staff, is committed to provide an ideal and collegial environment for studies in Bacteriology. Students are attracted to this environment from all across Japan and from around the world. The University provides a wide range of facilities for its students and staff. Recently, the first clinical isolated of vancomycin-resistance Staphylococcus aureus was discovered in our laboratory. This gained world-wide press coverage, and made the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention prepare for the coming threat of the organism. The research on the mechanism, epistemology and the therapeutic measures for these super-bugs is our main current task.
